China's wearable flying device takes first flight.

The Zhiyuan Research Institute in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, unveiled a wearable, electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) flying device on April 27th.

The new single-person aircraft features three propellers and is introduced as the world's first of its kind. Its electric propellers are positioned on both sides and at the rear, enhancing power reliability, noise control, and aerodynamic efficiency in hover mode. It can be used for various aerial activities such as emergency rescue, power line maintenance, skyscraper cleaning, recreational sightseeing, and border patrol.

The Zhiyuan Research Institute stated that in an emergency, the pilot can detach from the aircraft with a single click, deploying a low-altitude parachute to ensure a safe landing. A ground station-supported control system also simplifies the operation, allowing the pilot to hover stably and hands-free in autonomous flight mode while increasing maneuverability for aerial missions.

To ensure the vehicle's power, the research team developed an electrical system with a high thrust-to-weight ratio through aerodynamic optimization. Collaborating with universities and conducting extensive flight tests, they also created a flight control system with strong anti-interference capabilities, ensuring safe operation in complex environments.

According to a report released at the 2nd Global Low-Altitude Economy Spring Meeting in Beijing on April 27, drones are shifting from consumer applications to more specialized, larger-scale uses.

Luo Jun, CEO of China's Low-Altitude Economy Alliance, said that drones and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft will be applied in more scenarios in the future and integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The market size for this sector in China is estimated to exceed 1 trillion yuan ($137.23 billion) by 2030.

Last August, Tianmushan No. 1 multi-rotor drone from Tianmushan Laboratory successfully completed its maiden flight in Hangzhou. Introduced as the world's first 100 km-range hydrogen drone, it can be applied in various situations such as oil and gas exploration, power inspection, emergency rescue, forest protection, and water resource conservation monitoring. This flight marked a significant achievement in drone technology and China's developing low-altitude economy.
