Measure the flatness of EV Battery Pack

In electric vehicles, the battery pack is typically installed within the frame or structure of the vehicle. This is crucial because they need to fit within the dimensions to accommodate dozens of small battery cells. Checking for flatness is a critical step because the battery cells must fit precisely into the casing to ensure a tight seal.

The challenge

The challenge in testing the flatness of electric vehicle battery packs lies in ensuring accuracy and speed in the measurement process. With the requirement for durability and high accuracy, while also needing to fit within the tight space on a robot arm, finding a reliable measuring solution becomes difficult.

Furthermore, electric vehicle battery packs are often deeply integrated into the vehicle's structure and have stringent technical requirements. Therefore, ensuring the flatness of these packs demands high accuracy and reliability to ensure stable and safe operation of the electric vehicle.

Solutions

To address the challenge of testing the flatness of electric vehicle battery packs, Solartron Metrology offers various measurement options. In this case, four Jet Pneumatic sensors are installed on a robot arm to measure the flatness of the underside of the battery pack. It's noteworthy that the Jet Probes can still operate with pneumatic pressure even if the gaiter is damaged.

Key features of Solartron's measuring sensors include:

1. Compact design durability: Solartron's measuring sensors have a diameter of only 8mm, with options for a 6mm diameter, allowing them to be installed in tight spaces on a robot arm while still ensuring durability if properly maintained.

2. Highest resolution: Despite the stringent accuracy requirements of flatness calculations, Solartron's measuring sensors still provide resolution up to 0.01 micron, ensuring accurate measurements in a cost-effective solution package.

3. Multiple output options: Solartron offers both Analog and Digital outputs to meet the requirements of PLC systems, including:

   - DC and 4-20mA: Signal conditioning can be set directly at the sensor head on their G-type sensors.

   - Wireless: Through the Orbit® Digital Network, sensors can be connected and outputted via their Wireless Interface Module, or using their Wi Gauge Technology.

   - PLC protocol: Through Orbit®, Solartron's sensors can output with various PLC protocols, including Profinet®, Ethernet/IP®, EtherCAT®, Modbus, and CC-Link®.
